Standards and technology

About this page

This is initial documentation about how the DPP positions itself in supporting various technolgies.

A data portability standard is an established norm that enables our vision. It establishes a uniform criteria, method, process and practice.

Technical standards usually are under the jurisdiction of a standards body. Other standards that come from custom, convention, and company products that become dominant are "de facto standards".

The DataPortability Project recognises that the market as well as formal institutions have an equally important role in determining standards. Standards are an important means to enable the data portability vision, and as such, the DataPortability Project makes recommendations that hopefully will progress adoption.

Specifically, the DataPortability Project develops positions on technical specifications, guides, and definitions that allow for data interoperability on networked services.

What is an open standard?
A free and open standard is a published specification that is immune to vendor capture at all stages in its life-cycle. (Digistand.org/text:rationale)

Specific requirements over

  • Governance is open
  • rights to usage are free
  • patents are royalty-free
  • no constraints on reuse

Types of standards
Several types of technologies enable the vision of data portability. Broadly, they allow for authentication, data representation and transportation.
