Overview

Another important aspect to make data portable between social networks is the contact list. We recommend to support both FOAF and XFN for this. Service Providers MUST provide a document with either XFN or FOAF content which defines the relationships to other users in the system. This document CAN be protected as described in DP-REC-003 - Portable Data Authorisation.

Technology Purpose

XFN and FOAF are both accepted technologies for defining friend relationships. We support both because both are already in use in a variety of sites. XFN is a Microformat and the specification is here, FOAF has it's root in the wider RDF and Semantic Web Developer Community and is described here.

Selection Rationale

We have choosen to support both technologies as both have a wide adoption rate already.

Details of Adoption

Forming a vital component of the final approval process, this section should detail implementations that have adopted the technology, and therefore are showing that the technology has real-world applications and acceptance.

Action Group Backing

Members of the action groups that back this technology should be listed here, as a formal tracking of support for the recommendation.
